The alarm clock rings early. It’s just after four, a time when even the cock refuses to think about starting to crow. There’s no avoiding the 7.10 flight from Malpensa. Pierre arrives on time and we head straight for the airport. The weather is mild, and we realize this shortly after taking off, when we’re over the Alps. There’s no denying it, we’ll never grow tired of beauty. It would be a nasty sign if we failed to be amazed by such size. This magnificent and surprising sight is repeated over Greenland, when there is still four hours of flying time to go. This endless land of glaciers is the vital heritage of all of humanity.
It’s a long way from Paris to Chicago, but what with a chat here and a chat there, and reading documents, time flies.
On arriving, Chicago is bathed in sun, with a skyline presenting a variety of faces and colors. The river characterizes part of the city, and our hotel, the Monaco, awaits us … French and Brazilian colleagues arrive with us.
And we find ourselves immediately taken up by the frenzy of the trip.

Four days in which to discover one hundred years of history.
Not only the far off 11 November 1911, when, in Benton Harbor, Lou Upton, his brother Fred and their uncle Emory began to manufacture the first pieces of what would become electric washing machines. To reflect also on the next one hundred years, Whirlpool has brought together around some journalists from all parts of the globe, to give them the opportunity to visit the headquarters of the corporation, and to see, firsthand, the US factories that employ 17,500 workers.
The intense schedule began on the evening of Sunday 12 June and ends on Wednesday 15. The only invitation in Italy went to VareseNews, a carefully made choice, given the technological characteristics and history of the newspaper.
This blog is going to describe the various stages of the trip.
Quattro giorni per scoprire cento anni di storia.
Non solo quelli dal lontano 11 novembre 1911, quando, a Benton Harbor nel Michigan, Lou Upton, suo fratello Fred e lo zio Emory iniziarono a produrre i primi pezzi di quelle che sarebbero diventate le lavatrici elettriche.
Per riflettere anche sui prossimi cento anni, Whirlpool ha chiamato a raccolta una ventina di giornalisti da ogni parte del mondo. Un’occasione per visitare il quartier generale della corporation e per vedere le fabbriche statunitensi dove sono occupati 17.500 lavoratori.
Un programma intenso che parte dalla sera della domenica 12 giugno e termina mercoledì 15. Dall’Italia solo Varesenews. Una scelta precisa, e pensata per le caratteristiche tecnologiche e la storia del giornale.
Questo blog racconterà le varie tappe del viaggio.
E’ stata una iniziativa tutta natalizia per il 2010, ma i biscottini fatti col Jetchef erano decisamente dedicati al centenario: al lavoro un bel po’ di dipendenti di Whirlpool Emea, compreso il presidente Bracken Darrel (in fondo, nella foto, con cappellino e grembiule d’ordinanza). I biscotti, una massa di frollini con numeri 1 e 0 da comporre, pare siano venuti benissimo.
